Skin Lesion Removal (Cryotherapy)

Book Online or Call 07361 497692

Cryotherapy is the removal of skin lesions by freezing. The clinician uses a small pen shaped device called a ‘cyropen’ that uses nitrous oxide (N20) to rapidly cool the skin lesion. This causes the skin lesion to scab and fall off over the coming days and weeks.

FAQs

  • Skin lesion removal using cryotherapy is a very quick process. Treatment usually take 2-15 seconds per skin lesion, so the more skin lesions you have, the longer your appointment will be. We allow 30 minutes for cryotherapy appointments, however most patients will be done before this time.

  • Some people report a slight stinging sensation to the area being treated, but many people state it is relatively pain free. Treatments in sensitive areas such as the neck or face are more likely to cause discomfort. Treatments are quick so any discomfort will not last long.

  • We advise patients who require mole removal to first speak to their GP to confirm the mole is not cancerous and that it is suitable for cryotherapy. Once this is done we would be happy to remove the mole for you using cryotherapy.

  • We are able to treat multiple skin lesions at the one appointment. It is at the discretion of the clinician on how many they can treat at once, as the healing process takes time and we may need to allow for a portion of skin lesions to heal first before attempting other areas. This is decided on a case by case basis.

  • We find that warts and verrucas often need follow up apppointments 2-3 weeks later for an effective treatment. Some warts may need up to 4 appointments to be fully removed due to the hardy nature of them.

  • Cryotherapy has limited side effects and you should be able to return to your normal activities instantly after treatment. The skin lesion may become red/swollen/blister after treatment, and will begin to scab over the next few days, eventually falling off. Some skin lesions such as long term warts/verrucas may require several follow up appointments. Some hypo/hyperpigmentation (lightening/darkening of the skin) may be caused by treatment. This usually depends on the patients skin type, as darker skin tones tend to be affected by this more.

  • Yes we can treat anyone aged 10 years old and above. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

  • Cryotherapy is effective at treating many different types of skin lesions. Some of the more commonly seen lesions are skin tags, warts, verrucas, seborrheic keratoses, actinic keratoses, solar lentigos (age spots/liver spots), cherry angiomas, benign moles.
