What is the Combined FIT and Calprotectin Test?
The Combined FIT and Calprotectin Test is a diagnostic tool used to screen for various gastrointestinal conditions. This test involves the analysis of fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and calprotectin levels in the stool. Calprotectin is a protein biomarker found when inflammation occurs and raised levels may be associated with inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Who Should Do a FIT Test: Who Should Be Tested?
Individuals who should consider undergoing a Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) include:
Individuals Aged 45 and Above: FIT testing is recommended for individuals aged 45 years and older to screen for colorectal cancer.
Individuals with a Family History of Colon Cancer : Those who have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease are typically considered at increased risk and should undergo regular FIT testing.
Individuals with Symptoms: Those experiencing symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits, or persistent abdominal discomfort should consider a FIT test. However, it's important to note that a FIT or Combined FIT & Calprotectin Test should be the sole basis of your diagnosis.
