About Ear Wax Removal

  • ear wax impaction diagram

    What is ear wax?

Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural, protective substance produced by the outer part of the ear canal. Its made up of old dead skin cells, oily secretions, dust and debris.

Ear wax is very important for ear health as it prevents infection. Ear wax allows the skin to stay moist preventing skin from drying out as well as it trapping foreign bodies and debris and stopping them entering the ear canal. Usually, ear wax works its own way out of the ear through jaw movements when talking and chewing and when it reaches the outside of the ear, it flakes off. However this does not always work and ear wax can become trapped in the ear causing discomfort. The photo above shows ear wax impaction in a patients ear canal.

    What is a typical treatment?

Wizard Clinics strive to safely and professionally clear their patients ear wax concerns. With this service no longer being available on the NHS, we provide this quick and painless microsuction ear wax removal treatment for you.

A typical treatment involves our skilled clinicians using microsuction which has been found to be the safest and quickest method of ear wax removal. Treatments usually last 15-30 minutes.

Occasionally, ear wax can be very compacted and hard and it may be necessary for the patient to use a course of ear drops before the clinician can complete the removal completely. If this is the case, the clinician will arrange another appointment to come and complete the procedure when the wax is softer. To try to prevent this, we recommend using olive oil ear drops or ‘Earol’ for 2 days prior to your appointment if possible. (Olive oil ear drops can be purchased from most pharmacies.)

  • ear swabs for ear infection

    Who needs an ear swab?

Occasionally people are treated for ear infections but their symptoms do not improve. In this case, a swab of the infected ear can be taken and sent to a lab so that the type of infective organism (bacterial/fungal) can be identified (separate costs incurred for ear swabs). You will receive the results via email and can then pass these onto your GP so that the correct treatment can be established.

FAQS

  • The quickest and easiest way is to click the ‘book appointment’ button on our website. If you would rather speak to one of our helpful team, you can call us on 07361497692, or email info@wizardclinics.co.uk

  • We recommend using ‘Earol’ olive oil drops which can be bought in a pharmacy for 2-3 days before your appointment to soften the wax. Try to refrain from using ear drop products that contain ‘hydrogen peroxide’ as we have found over time that this tends to make earwax removal more difficult. There is nothing else you need to do!

  • Yes! We offer home visits across Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire and parts of Dorset.

  • As of September 2020 many GP practices stopped offering ear wax removal as a core service. Check with your own GP practice to see if they still offer it.

  • Symptoms of earwax build up include (but are not limited to): hearing loss, itching, discomfort in the ear, tinnitus, feeling of fullness… please book a consultation with us to see if you need earwax removed.

  • Most earwax removal treatments are complete within 30 minutes, occasionally, the clinician may not be able to remove sufficient earwax due to it being too hard. If this happens, you will kindly be asked to continue with Earol for a short course to soften the wax. The clinician will then return to remove the rest of the wax.

  • As with any medical procedure it comes with some risks, as a tube is being inserted into the ear canal, there is a risk of infection and very rarely it could cause eardrum perforation. Our clinicians understand the importance of your ear health and are highly trained to use sterile equipment and correct technique to prevent any damage or infection to the ear.

Most people do not have side effects and enjoy being able to hear clearly and feel well again. Occasionally, people may experience mild dizziness, ringing in their ears.

  • No, it should not be a painful experience but it is important to note it may be noisy.

  • It is not recommended to try to remove your own earwax (or get a friend to do it for you) as ears are very delicate and an understanding of the structure is needed. Using cotton buds or hair pins to remove the wax is not advised as it usually pushes the wax in deeper and worsens the problem.

  • No, earwax is produced to protect the ear and is very important. To prevent earwax blocking the ear canal, do not use cotton buds or put anything in the ear to try to remove wax as it often pushes it in further. Also putting other objects into the ear canal such as ‘in-ear’ headphones.

  • Yes, but this is at the discretion of the clinician as ear infections may cause narrowing of the ear canal, making treatment more difficult. There may also be some discomfort.

  • Yes, Please contact your GP to discuss if you have concerns.

  • We can treat children age 10 years old and above, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. We are unable to treat anyone younger than this at present.

  • Ear wax removal has limited side effects, although some people may experience mild earache, discomfort or dizziness for up to 48 hours post treatment. We recommend keeping the ear canal dry for several days after to avoid infection. Earol is recommended to be used 1-2 times a month to people prone to earwax buildup to avoid further treatments.
