Actinic Keratosis Treatment

Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common skin condition characterized by rough, scaly patches or lesions that develop on sun-exposed areas like the face, hands, and forearms. These precancerous growths are often a result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. The damaged skin cells fail to properly repair themselves, leading to the accumulation of abnormal layers that manifest as rough, sandpapery spots. Regular sun protection are key in managing and preventing the development of actinic keratosis.

cryotherapy treatment for actinic keratosis

What is a typical treatment?

We use a Cryopen, a medical device that uses controlled sprays of nitrous oxide gas to freeze the actinic keratosis. This causes the cells in the lesion to die and over the coming days the actinic keratosis will scab and naturally fall off. Cryotherapy works well on these lesions however larger lesions may require several treatments to be fully removed. Your clinician will discuss this with you at your appointment.
