Solar Lentigo Treatment
Solar lentigos, commonly known as age spots or liver spots, are small, flat, pigmented patches that appear on the skin due to prolonged exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. These spots are typically light brown to dark in color and can vary in size. Solar lentigos develop as a result of the skin's natural defense mechanism against UV damage. When the skin is exposed to excessive sunlight, it produces melanin to protect itself from further harm. Over time, this leads to the formation of concentrated areas of pigmentation, resulting in the characteristic appearance of solar lentigos. While these spots are benign and generally harmless, they are often considered a visible sign of skin aging and cumulative sun damage.
If you suspect you have a solar lentigo that requires treatment please schedule an appointment or contact a member of our friendly team who will be happy to assist.
What is a typical treatment?
We use a Cryopen, a medical device that uses controlled sprays of nitrous oxide gas to freeze the solar lentigo. This causes the cells in the lesion to die and over the coming days the solar lentigo will scab and naturally fall off. Cryotherapy works well on these lesions however larger lesions may require several treatments to be fully removed. Your clinician will discuss this with you at your appointment.
